Golf enhancement is not a new concept. The fact is, competitive and professional golfers have been doing this for several years. Now, golfers of every skill level are realizing the value of getting themselves into better golf shape in hopes of lower their scores AND decreasing the likelihood of injury. By looking at the “golfer” as a machine that drives the golf swing, we assess the physical condition of the golfer in terms of strength, mobility, stability and biomechanics. In Motion Spine and Joint Center has developed a program that is available to golfers who wish to learn what may be holding back their game.
The program consists of 3 main parts:
• A Golf Performance Assessment
• Treatment of Physical Limitations or Conditions
• Golf Specific Functional Exercises
The Golf Performance Assessment takes about an hour to complete and consists of 26 different screens. These screens have been selected to determine which area, if any, may be limiting the golfers’ ability to obtain the proper golf posture or position. The results of each screen will be compared to that of the average PGA professional for comparison and as a reference point. Once the screening portion is completed an evaluation of the findings are discussed with the golfer. If the physical limitation can not be corrected solely with functional exercises and mobility training then treatment will be recommended. Some of the more common physical limitations or conditions that are exposed through the Golf Performance Assessment are:
• Golfer’s Elbow
• Shoulder Impingement
• Insufficient Scapular Stability
• Decreased Hip Internal and External Rotation
• Insufficient Core Stability
• Decreased Thoracic (Mid & Upper Back) Extension
Golfers with these conditions are treated the same as all other patients at In Motion Spine and Joint Center. Please Click on Treatment Information for more information.
If no significant limitations were exposed or once the condition has improved, Golf Specific Functional Exercises will be demonstrated and prescribed. The exercises are easily performed at home and are designed to improve strength and mobility in golf specific muscles. Over time the exercises will be progressed to further challenge the golfer.
In Motion Spine and Joint Center is neither equipped nor knowledgeable in golf technique instruction. That is why it is highly recommended that golf technique information and instruction be obtained from teaching pros, such as Nancy Quarcelino. It can be valuable to obtain video analysis of the golfer prior to entering the Golf Performance Enhancement Program for comparison purposes, but it is not a necessity.
